mprovements over the Gen. 5 version:
The MDP500 Gen. 6 offers 24bit/96kHz analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters for all channels, radically improving analog stereo performance. (Gen. 5 version is 20 bit). Frequency response is improved from the Gen. 5's 20kHz to 40kHz on the Gen.6, with an increased signal-to-noise ratio of 6dB. All digital inputs (coax and optical) can now accept 24bit/96kHz bitstreams.
Additions and improvements of MDP500 Gen. 6 over the Gen.5 version:
Dolby Digital EX processing
6.1/7.1 processing of any 5.1 channel encoded material
DTS-ES Matrix 6.1 processing
6.1/7.1 processing of DTS 3/2.1 and DTS-ES Matrix material
DTS Neo:6 processing
6.1/7.1 processing of DTS 3/2.1 material AND synthesis from 2- channel material in
Neo:6 Cinema or Music mode
DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 processing
6.1/7.1 processing of DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 material
Dolby Pro Logic II
5.1 channel processing of any 2-channel material, whether Dolby encoded or not.
Movie and Music modes, the latter with surround parameter adjustments
Surround 6.1 processing
Proprietary alternative 6.1/7.1 processing of any 5.1 channel encoded material
Plus:
· There are 24bit/96kHz Analogue-Digital and Digital-Analogue converters for all channels. The result is improvements in the analog stereo performance: Frequency response is up from the Gen 5's 20kHz to 40kHz (<-1dB) on the Gen. 6 and the signal-to-noise ratio is increased by 6dB.
· All digital inputs (coax and optical) can accept 24bit/96kHz bitstreams.
· Any format of digital surround source can be down-mixed to stereo or mono.
· The “synthesized” surround modes have been improved, and reduced to just the most useful ones: - “Natural” and “Party”.
· Dolby Pro Logic II Music mode decoding allows user adjustment of “panorama”, “center width” and “dimension” settings.
· The VF display can now be dimmed from the remote.
· The MDP500 (Gen. 6) can be set up using the RS-232 control interface. Current settings may also be downloaded using the RS-232. This makes for quicker installation and means the installer can keep a back-up of the installation settings – even those set “manually”.
· The remote trigger can now be activated by any one of a variety of new sources, including: dimmed display; selection of any one of the six “video” inputs, or the presence of a specific type of video signal – in addition to all the options available on the current model. This provides much greater flexibility in setting up installed systems.
· The subwoofer low-pass filter (as set by the bass management system) can be defeated, so the subwoofer’s own filtering may be used instead.
· Loudspeaker distances can be entered directly in metres or feet – rather than having to calculate delays in milliseconds as on the Gen. 5 version.
· Maximum volume setting is increased to +15dB (5dB more than the Gen. 5 version) allowing use with low sensitivity power amplifiers.
· Improved preset setups through the addition of a “flat trims” option for each source, which applies the default speaker level and tone settings.
· Analog input sensitivities can now be adjusted in 1dB steps from -5dB to +10dB to accommodate a wider range of analog stereo source levels (as opposed to -6dB to +3dB in 3dB steps on the Gen. 5)
· An Analog Monitor feature now gives a bar-graph peak-reading display of the input signal level on the On Screen Display – so the user can check the signal level of any source and optimize the analog input sensitivity to prevent possible overload.
The MDP500 was awarded the Stereophile Guide to Home Theater Editor's Choice Gold Award for best processor and was a AA Recommended Component.
It has also received a Stereophile Magazine Class A Recommended Component rating.
Finally it received the UK's WHAT HI FI Magazine Award for Best Surround Processor two years in a row!
You would be hard pressed to find a better processor at anywhere near my asking price. Comes with a Myryad-branded Universal Remote Control model SL9000. This is a learning remote with LCD display and backlit keys for night time use. Packed in a mint, factory carton with owner's manual. Works on any voltage from 100 volts to 240 volts without any adjustment. Also works with NTSC or Pal video (worldwide).
