"My first impression of the new PJTX200J upon physical examination was WOOOO and WOOOOW!! The new projector comes in a dark charcoal grey colour and is dimensionally a little larger than its older brother the PJTX100J
The PJTX100 is quiet in whisper mode but the PJTX200 is quieter in the same whisper mode setting. This projector is barley audible even with your ear placed right up to the fan output. It would never disturb or interrupt the viewer or viewing experience in the quietest of movie scenes or with the stereo volume turned down.
USER MENU
The menu system is well laid out, very simple and easy to follow. It retains the user friendly features, with the tweakability of the old model, with a slight upgrade and improvement to the menu layout. It also includes the new features found only on the PJTX200 like, HDMI mode switching, over scan control on HDMI input, frame lock on and off, digital shutter and the Auto Iris control.
SCREEN DOOR/ SHARPNESS (Visible pixilation of the LCD panels)
The new PJTX200 is much more watchable from the same distance of 12 feet back on the same 100” screen. It produces very little visible pixilation. With out defocusing the image it is better than the PJTX100 was defocused. With an ever so slight, and I mean ever so slight defocus, barley noticeable in the menu lettering in the user menu, it is then completely absent for me at my viewing distance and screen size. This means that the new 5th generation LCD panels are sharper and better structured as far as the screen door issue is concerned. I was also able to turn the sharpness up to 5 out of 10 on this projector, while on the PJTX100 sharpness was set at 3 and maybe 4 was the most that you could use with out seeing edge enhancements and ghosting.
COLOR UNIFORMITY & VERTICAL BANDING
The new PJTX200 projector is a very far leap ahead of the older model in terms of both color uniformity and vertical banding. I have yet to see in my 80 hours of use and viewing any vertical banding on my projector. I have looked up close and hard for it and can not find any trace of vertical banding period. I have tried grey IRE fields from 10IRE to 70IRE and still can not see it. The color uniformity is a lot better on this model as well, with even color across the entire screen
AUTO IRIS /CONTRAST
When first hooked up and using the factory settings, which employed the Auto Iris 2 it had a very contrasty dark, and deep picture with lots of color. The image looked very good and most people would be very happy with it. However after some time viewing and in the process of starting my tweaking on this projector, the image started to look; well not so good. The Auto Iris 2 function works, but at the cost of significant shadow detail. Sure it makes things black, but black without detail is wasted. Viewing DVD and HDTV with Auto Iris 2 on is also very distracting, with it constantly changing to adapt itself from scene to scene and frame to frame? The contrast number on the PJTX200 was higher using Auto Iris 2, than the PJTX100 was tweaked and filtered, but the gamma curve was way off at about 2.8. With some changes and tweaking I could get it down at 2.6 but then the contrast number started to drop. The contrast ratio was still higher on the PJTX200 than the PJTX100 was with filter on. An Ideal gamma curve should be between 2.2 min. for more shadow detail and 2.5 max for a more dynamic or punchy picture. The Auto Iris 1 setting is better, and with proper tweaked settings it functions without notice in most viewing situations. I only see it from time to time as it makes a very faint adjustment. Let’s just say that their new model is at least 40% better in regards to apparent viewing contrast ratio using Auto Iris 1, without filter on, compared to the old model with the color correcting filter on.
CONCLUSION
I do know that I am very happy with my decision to upgrade to the PJTX200. I have been smiling ever since I first hooked it up and displayed my first image on it. The PJTX100 was a great projector, but great things fall away in order to make way for newer and even greater things. If an overall dramatic improvement in vertical banding, color uniformity, reduced screen door, sharpness and an improvement in contrast ratio of at least 40% is what your looking for, than the PTJTX200 is a very good projector and worth the upgrade indeed."
