A+

Greg Rogers a écrit:The Sony VPL-VW100 1080p SXRD front projector ($9,999) is a breakthrough product that will have a major impact on the home theatre industry. It shatters the previous $30,000 price barrier for 1080p front projectors, and it will undoubtedly inspire a
new pricing structure for 720p DLP projectors. But its impact goes beyond price

3. Some reports from CEDIA seemed to indicate that the Ruby exhibited slight motion blur or dithering. Did you make any such observations?
1. I would prefer the VPL-VW100. The Qualia doesn't have the contrast ratio, in any mode, that will satisfy me (else I would have bought one long ago). I said 2 years ago in the Qualia review that I preferred a DLP projector for its better contrast while watching DVDs (although I would narrowly have gone with the Qualia then for HD because of its better resolution), and since then DLP contrast ratios (the Yamaha DPX-1200 for instance) have become even better. The VW100 full-field contrast ratio is almost double the Qualia's even in the VW100 Iris Off mode, and I know some people aren't even using the best contrast mode in the Qualia because it has too little light output for the large screens they want to use. All that said, the Qualia does have a noticeably sharper image than the VW100, but I think the VW100 is good enough and in fact looks more like a CRT projector for that reason. However, I can imagine some people preferring the Qualia for a sharper image.
2. I would want to use the Iris On mode with the VW100. It has superb contrast and none of the brightness compression of the Auto Iris. But that's going to be difficult because I don't want to go to a smaller screen. So I would experiment with a higher gain screen, but there are issues with higher gain screens. I wish Sony had used a higher output UHP lamp instead of the Xenon lamp.
I would definitely end up switching between Iris modes, at least initially. I would use the Iris Off mode for casual viewing, i.e. sports, network TV, etc. and perhaps for brighter movies, and use the Iris On mode for movies that I know will be dark. This means that a screen must be picked that looks good with both modes, which may not be an easy thing to find. The Auto Iris mode is the variable, because it can look much better than the Iris On mode in dark films, and it solves the light output problem. So if the brightness compression problems are substantially improved by improving the algorithm parameters, then it could become the only mode that one needs. If not, you still have the option of switching between Auto Iris and Iris Off without screen issues.
3. I didn't see any dithering. That is the big advantage of the LCoS vs DLP. If someone saw "motion blurring", that may be how they described the visual effect of motion-adaptive deinterlacing. If they meant that the panel response time was too slow and that caused blurring, I don't think that is significant.
